Choosing Your Plants

Can you help me choose which plants are right for me?

Of course! You can browse by Species, by Use (e.g. a formal hedge or small woodland) or by Characteristic (say, autumn interest, fruits or native plants). You can then search within those categories depending on the growth rate, height and soil type.

How are my plants looked after and stored at your nursery?

After our plants are lifted and graded, we dip their roots in a Broadleaf Root Dip and heel them into one of our compost beds, keeping them safe throughout the winter months. We can then pick your order quickly and package them ready for despatch.

Should I choose bare root plants?

If you're investing in a planting scheme, whether small or large, we find customers are very often keen to buy in the most cost-effective way – and that’s bare root. They weigh less, making them easier to transport and quicker to plant. They are planted when they are dormant in the winter months and need little maintenance over that period. However, we do advise that whenever you plant bare rooted you allow for some natural losses; that is an accepted norm, but as long as you choose the right bare root plants for your soil type and location, you look after them upon receipt and you've planted as per our Plant Welfare Guide, bare root plant losses can be kept to a minimum and still remain the most cost effective choice.

When can I buy bare root plants?

Out of season (June to mid-November) – you can pre-order from June for delivery commencing in the November of that same year*.

In the season (Mid-November to April) – in season ordering for immediate despatch commences mid-November until the end of April (weather depending).

Bare root plants can only be lifted and planted when they are dormant. This means when the leaves have dropped and the plant is no longer in a growing state – usually from mid-November onwards. We can then lift, grade and send out your plants.

Bare root evergreens (e.g. Holly, Laurel, Privet, Yew) however, retain their leaf or needle all year round, still experience dormancy and are despatched in the same winter period.

When bare root plants start their active growing season in the spring, we stop sending out bare root plant material. This is generally from mid-April, weather depending.

You can pre-order bare root plants well in advance of the season start – just keep an eye on our website for pre-order dates so that you can plan ahead and ensure the earliest delivery.

*Please note that if you pre-order plants AND accessories during the out of season months (June to mid-November), your order will only be despatched in its entirety at the start of the bare root season, once the bare root plants are ready for lifting.

Any accessories requiring immediate delivery would need placing on a separate order.

Placing Your Order

How do I order?

If you're ready to order, it's time to fill your Shopping Barrow! Please follow our Ordering Guide to complete your purchase. You’ll need to sign in and have your payment ready to complete your order.

Is there a minimum order value?

We have a minimum order value of £10.00 excluding VAT and delivery. You will be unable to begin the checkout procedure if your basket contents fall below this minimum value.

How do I pay?

We offer two methods of secure payment online:

Sage Pay – through this secure payment service provider, we accept Mastercard, Visa, Visa Debit, Visa Electron and Maestro.

PayPal – if you have a PayPal account, you may process your payment through this secure online internet payment facility.

In both situations payments are taken immediately upon placing your order, regardless of whether it is immediate despatch or a pre-season order.

I've pre-ordered - when do I pay?

Online payments are taken immediately upon placing your order. If you have pre-ordered bare root plants outside of the bare root season, payment will still be taken at the time of placing your order. We will only despatch bare root plants from mid-November to mid-April (weather depending). At all other times, plants are despatched within the normal delivery timeframe.

How do I cancel my order?

We understand. It happens. Here's what to do.

In line with Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you are entitled to cancel your order for goods covered by cancellation rights (plants received are excluded from cancellation rights – see below) provided that you exercise your right to cancel no longer than 14 days after you receive your order.

Have you already received your plants?
Plants are exempt from cancellation rights due to them being liable to deteriorate or expire rapidly. Please see our plant welfare and loss replacement policy below for clarification on our approach to addressing plant issues.

To exercise your right to cancel, you must inform us of your decision to do so within the cancellation period. You can use our cancellation form (downloadable from, or use any of the following methods of contact:

If you opt to cancel, you should return the goods to us at your cost within 14 days of stating your desire to cancel. We will reimburse the amount in relation to goods which are covered by cancellation rights, including the cost of delivery (except for any supplementary costs if you chose any delivery method other than our standard and least expensive method of delivery).

Should you be unable to arrange for the goods to be returned yourself, we can arrange for them to be collected. The cost of the collection will be deducted from the reimbursement.

The reimbursement will be made using the same means of payment that was used for the initial transaction, unless expressly agreed otherwise.

The reimbursement will be made without undue delay and no later than 14 days after the returned goods are received by us or 14 days after the day we are provided with evidence that the goods have been returned to us. If no goods were dispatched, the reimbursement will be made no later than 14 days after we were informed of your decision to cancel. We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of goods returned to us, if the loss is as a result of unnecessary handling by you.

There’s a problem with my order. Can I return my plants and accessories?

If we’ve made a mistake, the most important thing is to let us know WITHIN 7 DAYS of receiving your goods. In the rare event that we have made an error that results in you receiving incorrect plants or products, we will replace the order either in its entirety, or in part, depending on your requirement. Alternatively, we will make arrangements with you for the item(s) to be returned at our expense and will make a full refund upon receipt.

All plant queries must be raised with us as soon as possible and no later than 7 days from receipt of the plants. We cannot accept returns beyond this point due to plant welfare.

Delivering Your Order

What are your delivery charges?

Our standard delivery charge to UK mainland is just £5.95 (inc. VAT), regardless of the number of items purchased. Please refer to our delivery and returns page for further details, including postcode surcharges.

When will my order arrive?

We aim to pick all orders (except pre-orders for bare root plants) within 48 hours of us receiving your order, Monday to Friday, subject to stock availability. Please allow 3-5 working days for delivery, unless there is a Bank Holiday when these timings may be a little longer.

Where stock levels are low and we await replenishments, please allow 10-14 days. We will always let you know if this is the case.

I’ve pre-ordered bare root plants – what happens now? Can I have my other planting accessories before these arrive?

If you require bare root plants AND planting accessories/cell grown plants AND you are placing a pre-order (i.e. you are placing your order outside of the bare root season - June to mid-November – the bare root season is typically mid-November to mid-April, depending on the weather) please note your order will only be despatched in its entirety at the start of the bare root season.

Any accessories or cell grown plants requiring immediate delivery would need placing on a separate order. Accessories and cell grown plants are available all year round and can be despatched immediately without any need to pre-order (subject to stock availability).

Can I specify a different delivery address or date?

If you have any special instructions regarding delivery address or preferred delivery date, please let us know when placing the order. You can include this information as you check out.

How are my plants bundled?

When we grade our plants, we generally bundle into quantities of 25 or 50 – depending on plant species and size. Taller plants may be bundled into quantities of 10.

How are my plants packaged?

Once we've picked your order, your bare root plants are root-dipped, placed into heavy gauge plastic bags and tied securely, ready for despatch. This keeps the roots damp until they arrive with you.

How are my plants despatched?

Your order will be delivered by Royal Mail, a nationally-recognised parcel carrier (smaller deliveries) or by a national pallet line company (larger palletised deliveries). Deliveries may arrive as one parcel in a single drop, multiple parcels in a single drop or multiple drops (i.e. not everything on the same delivery), depending on the nature of your order. We do not have our own delivery transport.

How do I look after my plants?

With every order that includes plants, we send out our Plant Welfare Guide. You can also check out our How To videos on Youtube which take you through what to check for upon receipt of your plants, to planting and adding plant protection.

What happens if I have any plant losses after planting?

It’s a fact of nature: sometimes, plants fail. Even if you've followed all of our planting and maintenance advice in our Plant Welfare Guide – you'll have received one with your order – there are many other factors which can affect plant losses. We advise every customer to allow for a rate of potential loss and to budget for replacements for two to three years after planting.
