Plant Protection

It is essential when planting bare-root stock to protect them from rabbit, hare or deer damage and can be considered false economy to try and get away without if there is a risk about.

For more information about attaching tree tubes and stakes,  view our video below;

You only need one rabbit to come along overnight and cause devastation!

The options are simple.

Cost of establishment vs. ongoing maintenance costs;

For woodland and shelterbelt planting, it is sometimes considered that the lower cost form of protection, such as spirals and canes, can lead to higher ongoing maintenance costs. When plants become ‘top heavy’, a spiral with cane may not support the plant in its early years to the same extent as a tube with stake. There is a balance to be considered.

Fitting Plant Protection;

Spirals or Tubex Easywraps and canes;

The first step is to secure the cane next to the planted plant making sure it is inserted to a good depth, ideally no less than 30cm for a 90cm cane. This will ensure rigidity against high winds and reduce ongoing maintenance issues.

Then follow up and fit the guard as the final task to be done. Spirals and Tubex Easywraps should be placed over the plant and the cane (the only purpose of the cane being to hold the spiral or Easywrap up)

Tubex tubes with stake;

Again the first step is to knock the stake into the ground beside the planted plant, leaving enough space between the stake and plant to place the tube over the plant. The stake should be knocked into the ground to a good depth to ensure rigidity against high winds and reduce ongoing maintenance issues.

The stake remains on the outside of Tubex Tree Tube or Shrub Shelter and is secured to the stake by way of a pre-fitted ratchet tie on the tube.

Benefit of Protection for Weed Control;

If you have protection on your plants then you can safely spray Roundup or any other Glyphosate based chemical to kill off weeds and grasses, without risk of chemical touching the plants.

If you do not require protection, however, then spraying to kill weeds would become a very risky operation. In this instance, we would suggest securing a roll(s) of weed control fabric to the ground prior to planting in order to suppress any weed competition. It is advisable to spray the ground weeds and grasses off first before securing the membrane.
