Golden Privet is a variation of the Japanese, or Oval-leaved Privet, with bright golden leaves. Semi-evergreen, it has some of the brightest leaf colour of any species, seen at its best in winter. Fast-growing, it is most often seen as a hedge in town gardens, it also makes an excellent free-growing shrub, or it can be clipped into topiary shapes which are highly ornamental, and less costly than more traditional topiary specimens.

Site and soil

Golden Privet will do well in most soils apart from very wet sites. It is wind and pollution tolerant, good on coastal sites, but should be given good light conditions.

Height and spread

Below are the approximate stages of growth, assuming sited in suitable conditions for this species;

After 10 years: 4m x 4m
After 20 years: 4m x 4m

Leaf and bark

The leaves are glossy, oval, 6cm long and semi-evergreen. The centre is green, deeply margined with bright golden yellow. The bark is greyish-brown, spotted with lenticels.

Flower, seed and fruit

The tiny tubular creamy-white flowers are borne in panicles 10cm long in July. They are followed by clusters of glossy black berries. The berries are poisonous to humans, but relished by birds.

Uses

Hedges, screening, topiary, specimen shrub.

Wildlife

Bees and other insects are attracted to the flowers and a number of moths including the Copper Underwing and Mottled Beauty are supported by this plant.

Plant Protection

  • Pests
  • Spraying

Spraying

Tubex tree shelters offer the benefit of not only protecting against animal damage, they also ensure that herbicides do not come into contact with the plants during spraying.

The main reason for spraying is weed control, however, there are other options available to suppress weeds, such as weed control matting.

Strimming

Young plants should be protected from damage caused when strimming. To protect plants solely for strimming, our strimmer guards are the ideal product.

Planting & Care

Planting

New hedgerows should be planted in two staggered rows 30cm apart.

We recommend a minimum of 5 plants per metre.

Aftercare

Hedges should be trimmed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
