This can dramatically reduce plant losses due to moisture stress and improves establishment and growth. Works well in conjunction with Rootgrow

Broadleaf P4 is a granular polymer which can absorb hundreds of times its own weight of water.

When the granules come into contact with water they absorb it, swelling to form discrete particles of water-charged gel. Incorporated into soil (or compost) the polymer granules act as thousands of tiny reservoirs of "contained" rain or irrigation water. Plant roots colonise  these reservoirs of water-charged gel and can extract over 95% of the stored water as required, over an extended period of time.

Broadleaf P4 is inert, safe for all plant species in all types of growing media and is non-contaminating; is durable in most growing conditions, giving years of environmental benefit;

We recommend an application rate of 2 grams per bareroot plant or equally you could work on 1 gram of granules to be mixed in with 1 litre of compost or soil

  • Put your compost / soil into a container and sprinkle the required amount of Broadleaf P4 granules on the top
  • Make sure your hands are very dry (or wear dry gloves) and mix the P4 into the compost so it is evenly spread
  • Put your compost/P4 mix into whatever you are planting into.. prepared whole in the ground or a container.., but do not plant anything yet
  • If it is a container ensure there is a sufficient gap at the top to allow for the P4 to swell to avoid an overflow
  • Water the compost to capacity and leave for an hour or so. Top up with more water to make sure the granules are fully hydrated
  • Plant your seeds or plants as normal
  • You can now safely relax - the need to water is usually reduced around 75% , so once or twice a week is often sufficient
  • Keep an eye on your plants and water whenever they show signs of wilting

What is the polymer made of? Is it plastic? Does it derive from petroleum? Thanks

Good afternoon,

Thank you for the question.

Please see below the feedback from the manufacturer:

P4 Polymer is made from materials to make a superabsorbent polymer, such as polyacrylamide copolymer, ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer, cross-linked carboxymethylcellulose, polyvinyl alcohol copolymers, cross-linked polyethylene oxide, and starch grafted copolymer of polyacrylonitrile to name a few.

As P4 Polymer is incorporated into the soil it will stay where it is placed and will eventually breakdown into smaller particles, as the recommended incorporation rate to the soil is only 0.01% the products of it decomposition are thought to be negligible.

I hope this helps and please do not hesitate to contact us again if we can help any further.

How long will the granules be effective in the ground?

Thank you for your question

The granules will continue to be active for up to five years before breaking down to a non-toxic material.

Soil and compost are easier to re-wet and wilted plants recover more quickly when water is applied after drought stress, although we would emphasise that you should not allow plants to become completely dry.

Can you add this to plants after they have been planted?

Thank you for your question.

In some circumstances yes, but as a general rule of thumb it is best to apply the granules directly to the soil or compost as the plant is being planted.

You can apply these granules to potted plants when you are re-potting them or to turf by aerating the soil with a fork to create holes that the granules can then be swept into, but the key element of success is to position these graules around the root system. Surface application does not ensure the granules will swell with water near the root system.
